Getting your first scooter is part of Guernsey life for many of us. It’s the first step on the road to independence. Usually, the hardest part is convincing your parents to let you have a scooter in the first place!
Our Family Fleet policies can provide insurance for you and there are many benefits for the family too – please see our Family Fleet policies.
We have many years experience in providing first time riders with insurance from the age of 14 onwards. There is even a good chance we insured your parents when they had their first scooter / bike.
If you already have a Family Fleet policy with us, we can simply add you and your scooter to this policy. Otherwise, we can set up a Family Fleet which can accommodate all the family’s vehicles and drivers including you and your scooter.
Your first stop is Bulwer avenue and the States Driver & Vehicle Licensing Department.
If you are just turning 14, you will be entitled to apply for a Category “P” licnese. This entitles you to ride / drive “any 2 or 3 wheeled vehicle with an engine not exceeding 50cc or electric engine having a maximum continuous rated power not exceeding 4kw.”
Having received your provisional license, you then need to book on a CBT course. Just having the license does not mean you can ride the bike until the CBT has been completed, but at this point the bike can be insured.
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate
If you hold a provisional licence in categories P (also A1, or A) then you cannot legally drive or ride your motorcycle or scooter on a public highway unless you have successfully completed a training course for motorcyclists (CBT) & have been issued with a certificate of completion.
But in order to apply for the CBT, you must have a valid provisional license, the correct safety gear and most importantly – a live insurance policy in order to sit the CBT.
Scooters can be covered on a Comprehensive, Third Party, Fire & Theft and Third party only basis.
Comprehensive covers you for the damage to your bike, subject to an excess applied to the policy.
The next level of cover, Third Party, Fire & Theft covers you for repair or replacement of your Motorcycle if it is damaged by fire, theft or if it is stolen.
And third party liability covers you for the damage you cause to others and the costs for injury to other people or damage to their property.
Absolutely! We offer a range of policies and cover options for riders. This includes:

We are proud to support the local community and invest in local services for your convenience.
Every risk is different and every person has unique circumstances to accommodate. Try us for those complicated or hard to place policies. Equally for those without insurance history, or with claims, we will strive to find a suitable policy that caters for your specific requirements.
It’s far easier to deal with one broker for all your insurance needs. With a wide range of products available from different insurers, we can be your one-stop-shop for all your insurance needs either for yourself our wider family or your business. For instance – our family fleet policy enables you to place all of your household’s vehicles including cars, vans and bikes under one flexible policy.
One of the benefits of having been in the island for so long is that we can feedback the unique needs of islanders back to insurer partners. This counts when it comes to claims arrangements and for instance fighting for local choice on repair networks. It also means working with insurers to create flexible products such as our unique family fleet policy, which makes arranging insurance for your whole family that much less stressful – one premium, one renewal date, one policy.
