Public liability insurance protects your business against legal and compensatory costs incurred should a third party be injured whilst on your premises. Public liability insurance also covers yourself when on your premises and working off-site.
What does public liability cover?
Compensation Claims: For injury (or death) to third parties, whether they are on your property or theirs.
Legal Expenses: Should a claim be made; public liability insurance provides cover for the cost of legal proceedings.
Repair Costs: Public liability covers the cost of repairs to third party property as a result of your actions i.e. an electrician who damages a building in carrying out an installation.
Do you need public liability insurance?
Unlike employers liability, public liability is not a legal requirement. It is, however, common place to see businesses obtain cover in order to protect themselves against the ever increasing cost of claims.
Although not legally required, some professional bodies or local authorities will require a certain level of cover in order to work for public institutions or within specific buildings. i.e. a builder who works for his local council or within an airport will require a higher limit of coverage than if said builder was working on domestic properties.
What coverage levels are available?
Clegg Gifford are able to provide varying levels of cover (otherwise known as limits of indemnity) to clients when they are looking to obtain public liability insurance. These levels of coverage are: £1,000,000, £2,000,000, £5,000,000 or £10,000,000.
The level of cover you purchase will depend entirely on your occupation, but we are able to increase your coverage level mid policy term should a client of yours (i.e. a local authority) require it.
